I don’t advocate going out and buying a T-Mobile Phone JUST to get this awesome money saving application, ShopSavvy. However, it is something to consider when thinking about purchasing a new phone. If you already have the G1 phone , you can install it ASAP. Shop Savvy is designed for people like ME who want to comparision shop.
With Shop Savvy, you take a picture of a product’s UPC code with the G1’s built in camera. Once scanned, the Shop Savvy will search locally finding your location by using the phone’s built in GPS and online for the best deal. While, this isn’t ideal for grocery items, I think it would be awesome for larger purchases. It would have been great to have this when we were dishwasher shopping. We lugged around 3 of our 4 kids comparision shopping and I don’t have to tell you how that went.
Here’s some of the question I posed regarding Shop Savvy and the answer I received:
Do you know if they plan on adding more and possibly adding more grocery stores to compare? I actually don’t think it is something I would use for grocery shopping because I could be in the store forever but probably more for larger purchases or household purchases.
You’re right — it’s not ideal for grocery shopping because the price differences are generally in the pennies. However, ShopSavvy is planning to add allergy, health and ingredient data for groceries soon, giving people more of a reason to scan food items.
How do they factor is sales and how often is their database updated? For example, if Amazon has a price drop at 12pm, what time does the Shop Savvy system have that in their system?
Answer: All changes are immediate.
Is there any plans to make this application available for other phones?
Answer: Yes, it will soon be available on iPhones, and a version is being created
for BlackBerry as well.

You can watch my video demonstration on the ShopSavvy:
What do you think? Would this application be useful to you? If you had a choice between two identical services and phones and one you were able to download this application, would you choose that over the phone which didn’t offer this service?
