smart cooking tip: To stretch a pound of lean ground beef or turkey farther (for instance, in tacos), I stir in a bag of cooked brown rice (boil in the bag). Not only does the brown rice add fiber and make it more filling, but we get an extra meal out of the meat this way.

Smart cooking tip, if you’re out of milk just use some creamer with a bit of water mixed in and it works just the same. You can also do it with yogurt. Much cheaper than a gallon of milk!

Chopping up my veggies as soon as I get home from the store means I actually use them in lots of dishes. Somehow having to prepare them later equates to not using them at all. I find we eat so many more veggies with all of our meals this way and we don’t waste fresh food!

Smart cooking tip – I buy meat in bulk when it’s a good deal. When I get home I put the meat into single serving ziploc bags before freezing so I don’t overeat and don’t ruin the portions I’m not ready to use.
I also make meals that are larger (lasagna) that make for wonderful leftovers so I spend less time cooking.

To double the amount of your butter used for spreading, simply whip it with a small amount of warm water until it’s light and fluffy. This isn’t ideal for baking recipes that need a specific fat amount, but it’s great for spreading on your bread or corn-on-the-cob. Just keep it in the refrigerator, and it should stay light.

Smart tips ~ I tend to make extra just in case one of my 3 teenage daughters brings home company. We are big on leftovers & usually I make larger meals on the weekends. Tuesdays are our leftovers night so that I can clean out the fridge. I buy in bulk when it comes to meats, separate them into meal size freezer bag portions. I only buy meat when its on sale or at our local Sam’s Club. I read & love so many of the other suggestions posted! Many I do but some I’ll be trying in the near future! Thanks!

I used to buy the bagged lettuce, but now I buy green leaf lettuce, wash it, spin it in the spinner, and bag it myself. Shred some carrots and I have my own bagged lettuce for way cheaper. thanks!

Tip: Use beans instead of meat in a recipe for an inexpensive alternative.

Don’t throw away the wrappers from sticks of margarine or butter. Put them in the freezer and then take them out when you need to grease a pan for baking.

My smart tip is to clean as you go when you cook. It makes for easier clean up at the end.

I grew up in a household where my father had to watch his sodium intake. You would be amazed at how little you really need to add salt to dishes. Mom always said the only exception was some baking goods.

Plain yogurt is a healthier (and often cheaper) sub for sour cream. Great for lactose-intolerant folks too!

smart cooking tip: use aluminum foil instead of plastic zip lock bags for things that are fried or dry. they’ll stay that way!
