{Indiana Family of Farmers} Summer Fun | Homemade Ice Cream Play & Freeze #FarmsMatter

June is National Dairy Month and to celebrate the kids and I had some fun. June is the perfect month for ice cream in Indiana as it is warming up but it’s not so hot that the ice cream is melted before you even get it out of the container. Interesting fun fact, Indiana ranks second in the nation for ice cream production. We scream for ice cream in this state!

To have fun, I decided to make the kids work for it tonight. They had already had a little ice cream with their strawberry pie at grandma’s house earlier in the day so working off a few extra calories for their ice cream sounded like a fun idea. Enter the YayLabs Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker.

Play and Freeze Ice Cream Ball

We gathered up our supplies to make some delicious homemade ice cream. Per the instructions on the ball, all we needed was ice, rock salt, dairy product, sugar, and vanilla. The heavier type of dairy product you choose, the less you will have to shake and roll the ball. We could have used the milk in our fridge but we went ahead and used the heavy whipping cream to make a thicker and quicker ice cream while playing.

With this method you are going to work for it. I was sweaty just after putting the ingredients in since I had to keep beating down my bag of ice to get the ice small enough to fit in the ball. It isn’t a perfect method and I thought I was losing the kids interest at first. They seemed a little bored just shaking and rolling the ball. I was starting to panic thinking I did not want to be shaking this ball for 20-30 minutes by myself. Soooooo…….I decided to make it a game to see who could roll the ball on the driveway the farthest. This hooked them. I made my first vine that you can watch!

Ice Cream Ball Fun

Making Home Made Ice Cream Fun

Of course, I didn’t read the instructions completely before starting so make sure you read them thoroughly before starting! I ended up putting the entire cream mixture in at first instead of doing half, shaking for 10 minutes, and then adding the rest. Which meant the stuff in the middle wasn’t nearly as thick as the stuff on the outside edge. Oops! Typical Briana! I hate reading instructions. It was fine as the kids LOVED drinking the more liquid part of the ice cream and it was just like a milk shake.

Again, with this method you will work hard. You will have fun. You will enjoy delicious homemade ice cream.

Homemade Ice Cream National Dairy Month

The kids can’t wait to do it again. I think it will be a fun poolside activity at grandma’s house this summer but I’d prefer the next batch be made in our Cuisinart Pure Indulgence Ice Cream Maker for a larger batch with less work.

Some Fun Dairy Facts

  • An adult cow drinks nearly a bathtub full of water a day.
  • June Dairy Month originated at National Milk Month in 1937. It changed to National Dairy Month in 1939 to reflect all the choices dairy foods offer—with milk, cheese and yogurt products available in varieties like low-fat, fat-free and lactose free.
  •  Some cows wear pedometers to monitor how many steps she takes a day—time spent walking can be a sign of how healthy the cow is! (I wonder if they are wearing their Fit Bits too?)
  • Dairy farming and processing contributes $810 million to the Hoosier economy every year and creates 8,220 Indiana jobs

Since it’s June Dairy Month, this is also perfect timing for me to announce something very exciting for me! I’ve been chosen to be a Dairy Refuel Runner Ambassador. If you follow me on Twitter you will see me posting my training for several upcoming 5K’s in Indiana using the #WinnersDrinkMilk hashtag. Studies have shown that chocolate milk is the best recovery beverage after a hard work out and it’s also the official refuel beverage of IRONMAN. I won’t be doing anything that hard core but I will working to improve my 5K race time!

{Raised Bed Gardening Part 1} Putting Together the Raised Beds

This year I decided I wanted to do a garden. We have tried to do a garden in the past and it often ends in a weedy rotting vegetable mess. This year, I decided to take a smaller approach to my garden with a raised garden attempt.

Our summers get so incredibly busy especially now with two boys in travel baseball and another child who is almost done with Pee Wee baseball along with just normal life and work! In the past we have tried to do too big of a garden, in my opinion, which has contributed to the overwhelming aspect of gardening. There was also the issue of a water source. The hose would have to be dragged quite a ways to the garden. When we would come home after 9 p.m. after a baseball game, we just wouldn’t have any energy left for the garden.

It wasn’t all a failure. We did can around 20 cans of tomatoes and we had a successful eggplant once. However, it wasn’t the grandiose plan we had in mind. We haven’t even attempted a garden in the past few years and our traditional garden in the backyard has now creeped back to grass. I decided to try my hand at the raise garden bed especially after I found a deal on this Greenes Fence Cedar Raised Garden Bed at Home Depot. I was able to get mine for $29.99 each shipped but the prices are normally $39.99. You can find these at places like Home Depot or Amazon.com. If you are handy, you can find a easy tutorial online to make your own, which would save you even more money.

I didn’t feel that handy and the deal on the Greenes Fence Cedar Raised Garden Bed shipped to my home sounded like a great idea. It was super simple to put together. I was able to put together two of these in about 15-20 minutes.

Raised-Garden-Beds

After these were put together, I made a trip to Menards to get my soil!

Updated to add: If you are going to do multiple beds, makes sure you leave enough space between the two of them and your home to get a lawnmower through it! I didn’t do this and have had to hear about it every time the boys mow! :) (Lots of you left this comment too as a suggestion! Too late for me but hopefully not too late for others!)

Stay tuned for Part 2 in this series!

Extreme Frugal Confessions: Cleats, Cleats, Cleats

Extreme Frugalness. Tight, cheap, stingy? You know what I’m talking about and personally, I love it.

fru·gal
- Practicing or marked by economy, as in the expenditure of money or the use of material resources.

ex·treme
- Most remote in any direction; outermost or farthest: the extreme edge of the field.
- Being in or attaining the greatest or highest degree; very intense:

Growing up in a middle class family, I was raised to live frugally and within your means. My parents provided us with everything that we could possibly need, though not always with everything we wanted. Our kids today compared to how my husband and I grew up are completely spoiled.

Sometimes these lessons were good and sometimes these lessons were very painful. As I’m thinking of my kids and what they will need for their Spring sports, I’m vividly remembering a painful lesson about cleats. If my parents are reading this, I know you meant well and were living within your means, which is extremely smart. Also, I wasn’t traumatized for life – in fact, it made me work harder!

It was 5th or 6th grade in the middle 80s. I had signed up for soccer on a co-ed team. All the coolest of the cool kids were on the team. Most were children of doctors and lawyers and real estate agents. Not me and I was one of just a few girls on the team. Since this was my first year to play soccer, my mom didn’t think I needed to get new cleats. I could just wear her softball cleats that were a size too large to play soccer. Of course, that would work! Of course, mom !

cleats

Obviously, they did work just as intended. However, it wasn’t what I wanted. I remember being absolutely mortified to go to the soccer field in those cleats. I was mad, embarrassed, and extremely determined. Determined to not let the cleats define my ability. But really, who was I kidding, I thought these horrendous bangs were awesome!

look at those bangs!

It could be my imagination or just a extremely dramatic memory of the experience but I remember being stared at and possibly laughed at by my teammates. I’m sure you all remember how mean and cruel kids that age could be – especially boys. I’m sure I was the same at some point as well. For some reason, I also remember wearing shorts that were way too short. I know they weren’t Umbro! Once I got over that initial practice of wearing those ugly, too large, softball cleats.

I came across this picture and I don’t think I was paranoid or maybe he just liked those short shorts!

staring at me cleat

Did this stop me from playing soccer that year? No, I finished the season. I continued to play. I also knew then that I had to work to get the things I wanted. My parents gave us all they could and more than we needed even if they were on a budget but kids always want more. They always want the best, the newest, the most expensive even if they don’t need it. It feels so much better when you earn things instead of having them given to you undeservingly.

While these experiences encouraged me to work harder to earn money for the things I wanted, I find myself giving into my kids way too often. I want them to also feel that little pain of embarrassment so they will work harder while not completely traumatizing them for life!

Do you have a memory like this that you remember that is specific in your mind?

You know you have a confession to make. To what extremes have you gone to save a buck this week or in the past?

{Shaklee Blogger} Month 3 Check-In | Will I Ever Get it Together?

Gosh, I’ve been putting off this post because I’m not seeing the weight loss that I would like to be seeing on the Shaklee-180 program. I think much of it is still me as I’m sticking to program from 7-5 but the evenings I’m not able to control myself as well. The good news is I have NOT gained weight and my jeans feel a little looser but I’m not seeing any actual inch loss at this point.

I feel like I’m sucking at this, though but since I decided to be open and honest with ya’ll about this journey, I’m forcing myself to write this post. I really need to buy some new summer clothes but I’m really dreading buying these bigger sizes of clothing.  This week I went through some Facebook photos from a few years ago when I felt I was at a good weight. I’d love to get back to here and I need to use these photos as motivators that IT IS POSSIBLE.

See possible…

briana 2008

and more possible…

briana blissdom

geesh, I love younger too with all that fat off of my face….

I’m tired of being fat. I’m tired of feeling fat. I’m tired of having to worry about it. Why can’t I remember that when I’m chomping down that chocolate or cheese? I’m seriously thinking I need one of those shockers that shock me when I think about either one of those foods! Would that work?

Last month I resolved to stick  to the plan and do these things:

  • No more fancy coffees. I stuck with this one! I even put away my coffee maker so I wouldn’t be tempted to make my own at home.
  • No more soda/pop.  Yeah, I started back up on this one again too. Something about the ballpark makes feel like I have to have a fountain drink. Um, FAIL on this one. Again, I really enjoy my fountain drink at the ballpark and instead of drinking diet soda because I’m paranoid about the sweeteners they use, I have been drinking Sprite. I know, none of it’s good for ya but this needs to end. Plus, it will save me $1.50 every time I get one and a few hundred calories.
  • Get back to walking/jogging 3-5x per week.  I’ve been walking/light jogging almost every other day is what is averages out to. However, I still feel like I can ramp up my intensity on these! I’ve even been “sneaking” in walks before baseball games while the kids are warming up. This can be improved but I did stick with my goal here.

For June, I resolve to….

  • Drink 64 oz+ of water. Eliminate my fountain drinks completely. It’s either all or nothing for me so it needs to end.
  • STICK WITH THE PLAN IN THE EVENING, which means coming up with some good meal plans for me for the evenings.
  • Ramp up the intensity with my walking/jogging.

Staycation: Enjoy Clearwater Beach on a Budget

Clearwater Beach Florida Staycation

If you are on a budget, there are still plenty of fun and inexpensive or free things to do if you live near Clearwater Beach, Florida. Unfortunately, I don’t live in Florida but we do try to vacation there often as you will probably be able to tell from the wide range of pictures I have below. The sand is some of the most brilliant, white, and soft sand you will find., which is one of the many reasons we love to visit Clearwater Beach.

The Pier

One of our favorite things to do during the day or during the evening while in Clearwater is to visit the Pier. There is a playground for the children or take a walk down the Pier and watch the boats come in or see what the fishermen are catching. There is oftentimes free entertainment in the evenings as well as vendors set up along the Pier and surrounding sidewalks. Check out Sunsets at Pier 60 to see the latest information.

When we were here on Spring Break this year, they had some blow up water attractions near the Pier that were inexpensive for the kids to enjoy! It was around a $1 a turn, which I thought was decent when you compare the cost of a water park. Enjoyment without spending your entire day gone from the beautiful beach.

There are many artisans along the Pier and will vary from time to time including musicians, street performers, and artisans. The kids – even the big one – had some balloon animals created by a nice man, who was only asking for donations. This year we were able to watch part of a man-eating fire show before the rain started. There is always a variety of entertainment!

Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Save 25% when you buy your tickets online for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. General admission includes entry to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and the Winter’s Dolphin Tale Adventure along with a FREE Jolly Trolley ride to and from! In case in you didn’t know, Winter is the dolphin that inspired the movie Dolphin Tale!

 The Beach

The beach is FREE, just find yourself a place to park and you can have an entire day of enjoyment in some of the most beautiful sand you will find in the world. Sand toys are inexpensive and cups and bowls always work too! I will admit that when we go to the beach, I sort of become a bum. I would personally be happy to stay on the beach the entire day just enjoying the sand, the fresh air, and relaxing with a good book.

Find a seashell or two. Hey it’s free entertainment. The best kind, right?

Plus, you will find these fun spots to take photos with your kids! They are all over the beach for your photo enjoyment.

It seems like no matter which area we stay at in Clearwater Beach, Florida, there is always a nice park nearby with play equipment for the kids. If you know my family, you will know these are super old photos as the kids are still so little.

{#ShakleeBlogger} Vlog: Getting Back on Track

I’m back on the wagon! I’m taking it one day at a time. So far, I’m 5 days in a row for staying within my calories and on the program! I’ve also exercised 3x in these 5 days so this is progress. I am laughing that YouTube automatically set this as “Comedy” category. Ha ha. I wasn’t trying to be funny and I don’t really think I was!

{#ShakleeBlogger} Getting Back on Track…..

Shaklee 180 SmootheesSo, it’s time to come clean. I fell off the wagon. I was doing great for the first 3 weeks on the program with sticking to my healthy eating plan, exercising, and getting my water in. Then vacation happened.

You know the whole I’m out of my routine and I’m going to try to be so good attitude. It lasted for about 3 days. Then vacation mentality started. I mean, my FitBit was logging me at over 10,000 steps per day so I deserved to eat whatever I wanted all day long, right? Um, no.

The last three weeks I’ve done horrible. I have many excuses. We’ve been busy with sporting events, practices, and the like. It’s been rainy out. I’m stressed out. I left all of my meal plans and snack bars in our condo on vacation so I don’t have my convenience go to foods. (I did do this but it’s not an excuse since I still had my smoothee mix!) “So many others are having success and now I feel like a failure” type of mentality. I could go on and on about my excuses for not getting back with the program.

I’m honestly afraid to step on the scales at this point. I don’t want to know if I’ve gained back the 5 lbs I lost at the beginning of the program. I’m guessing yes based on the way my ring fits!

I’m sure many of you have been there and done this circle of shame. Actually for the last week, I’ve done decent until about 5 p.m. every day. Then it all goes downhill. There is something about my complete lack of control as soon as I pick up my kids. It is so easy to stick to my plan when I’m at the office where I bring my snacks and lunch and don’t have unlimited access to the refrigerator and pantry and I don’t have kids screaming and fighting with each other, which makes me want to reach for the comfort of my Reese’s cups.

So today, Monday, April 29, 2013 I resolve to stick with the plan. This means:

  • No more fancy coffees. (I started back up on this habit. I’m now 4 days without caffeine so I think I can stick with this one!)
  • No more soda/pop.  Yeah, I started back up on this one again too. Something about the ballpark makes feel like I have to have a fountain drink.
  • Get back to walking/jogging 3-5x per week.  I feel better when I do this so it will help me stick with the plan!

This month is about motivation. I’m going to motivate myself right back into this program…..

How To Soften Towels

Soften Towels with Vinegar

After time, towels can lose their absorbency and become stiff. I’ve read that the main reason for this is the build up of fabric softeners. Once they start to get stiff, it’s harder to clean your towels and you may notice a musty type of smell no matter how often you clean your towels. The reason is this build up and there is an easy fix for it instead of going out and buying all new towels!

The fix?

Our friend vinegar which is around $0.80 at ALDI or you can buy in bigger bulk at the discount warehouse stores. Just add around 1 cup during the rinse cycle or put in your fabric softener slot in your washing machine.

If you are worried about your towels smelling like vinegar, you shouldn’t worry as I’ve been adding vinegar to my laundry for awhile now and the clothes come out smelling fresh and nothing like vinegar.

5 Meal Planning Tips for Busy Families

5 Meal Planning Tips for Busy Families

Spring is here and the need to freshen up your weekly dinner recipes may be part of your “spring cleaning“. The “what are we having for dinner” moment can be a source of dread and frustration for many people. As a mom of four kids who are extremely active in everything, I feel your pain.

Here’ are some of my favorite meal planning tips to help you save both time and money:

Gather 15-20 family favorite meals

Sit down with your family and ask them what their favorite meals are. You may be surprised by some of the meals they love or some that just don’t appeal to their taste buds. The last thing you want to do is waste time and money by preparing meals that your family doesn’t enjoy. Organize your recipes with a notebook, spreadsheet, or use bookmarking sites like SpringPad.com, Ziplist, or Pinterest.

Once you have the family’s preferences on meals, inventory your pantry and freezer to see if there are ingredients on hand you can utilize for your plan. Be sure to check to see what items you could possibly substitute in your recipes, such as rotini for macaroni. Oftentimes, you can make adjustments based on what you already have on hand to fit the recipe.

Create your menu

Write your menu on a blank calendar or simply on a piece of notebook paper. Write out each day of the week with slots for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you are a beginning meal planner, consider starting with just dinner to keep things simple.

Consult your family calendar and make any notes of specific activities for certain days. This helps to have written out when deciding which meal is best suited for a particular night. Do you have a baseball game? Is there a school program? Take these into account when planning your menu as you want to make it as easy as possible on busy nights.

Create a shopping list

Create your shopping list by consulting weekly circular for your favorite grocery store or use free coupon match-up site. There are also list creating sites such as Ziplist.com, which will help you create a shopping list online and will even create your list based on the recipes you choose.

Fast 5 meals

Fast 5 meals are meals that you can quickly make at home and get on your table in less time than it takes to order take-0ut. Tape a list of your fast five meals on your refrigerator or pantry door. You will save time and money because you won’t be tempted to stop for fast food as you know you have these items in your pantry. Meals that are good for this list are quesadillas, spaghetti, pizza croissants,  tacos, and a new household favorite pepperoni pizza balls. These will be things you know your family likes and things you normally have stocked in your pantry.

Freezer meals

Make a double batch of your family’s favorite meals each time you cook to quickly create a freezer full of home-cooked meals. I love to make a double batch of lasagna, enchiladas, chili to name a few. You can save so much money by preparing your own freezer meals  that also do not contain all the preservatives of store purchased freezer meals.

Bulk cook and freeze meal components. I often do this with ground beef or chicken breasts. I will cook a double, triple, or quadruple batch and freeze to use on another day. Doing this makes it easy for beef tacos to be on our fast five meal list. See if there is a Zaycon meat delivery in your area for $1.79/lb chicken!

While these tips may seem simple, the savings in dollars and time can be significant. Before you know it, you could cut your grocery bill in half while ensuring you are providing your family with healthy and delicious meals every night of the week.

How do you plan for busy evenings?
