Free Things to Do in Kissimmee Florida and Other Local Attractions

Thinking about visiting Kissimmee, Florida? We are headed to the Kissimmee area this year so I’m on the lookout for inexpensive attractions for my family.

Last time I visited the Kissimmee, Florida area, which is just south of Orlando, I was around ten years old. I’m sure much as changed in those “few” years. I still treasure those memories and I hope my children will too!

First thing I did was check out the Special Offers on the Visit Kissimmee site, which showcases last minute offers, fall getaways and other packages. These offers change often, so you will want to check often.

Lodging: The most economical choice is to camp, of course. Kissimmee has several campgrounds and RV parks to choose from. While it is the most economical choice, I’m not a big fan of camping even if it is luxury camping. This is the reason why the Special Offers page is handy to find deals.

Of course, everyone knows about Disney World but what else does Kissimmee have to offer?

One of the first places on my agenda is the Kennedy Space Center. You can easily spend a whole here with the exhibits, movies, and the new Shuttle Launch Experience Ride as well as the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. I know my kids will love this.

Gatorland looks like a fun activity for the whole family. When I was in New York this past fall, I was able to meet up with this lovely creature from Gatorland. Yes, I was a little freaked to be so close!

The men will be hitting up one of the many Florida golf courses and taking the boys fishing a day.

For Budget Travelers, there are many free attractions in Kissimmee you can visiting including the Old Town Shopping, Dining, and Entertainment Complex. On the weekends, it is a transformed with custom cars, which is a huge hobby of the children’s grandpa. They boys have picked up on the car crazy gene too!

One week will probably not be enough time for all the things we would like to do and this isn’t even including the two days we will be visiting Disney World.

My Grandma use to live in Kissimmee and my cousin use to work at the chamber of commerce. I loved to visit! I always had a free place to stay and lots of free stuff to do. You will never get bored when you visit!

I would say you have to visit Old Town. It is so fun to just walk around and see all the stores and things going on in the streets. They use to have a store at the end that would sell really cheap bottles of Coke. Kissimmee is a great “central” location for a ton of attractions.

I moved to Kissimmee my 8th grade year. Lots of fun things to do there. Old Town was really fun. There is a huge flea market along the strip. Great outlet shopping malls all over. Midevil Times is really neat too ! They have a website with coupons available most all the time. There used to be a place that you could go on airboat tours. There is also an airport in Kissimmee that houses a blimp that floats over most dome games in Florida. You can check their schedule but that is really neat to watch it take off. So many things to remember. If I can think of more I will add them. Hope you guys have a great time !

Kennedy Space Center isnt very close to kissimmee though. It would take at least 30-45 min to get there from there.

  I guess they consider it part of the area? I know it is one of the first things we are doing! They are even having a launch the week we are there! :) You are from Orlando, right?

Dont forget the wizarding world of Harry potter at universal. It may be a little farther away but it is opening this spring and would be a great idea for tweens and up!

  That sounds like fun! I don’t know how many parks will we do though! I’ve heard Universal is fun for the older kids.

Hubby and I like walking around Gaylord Palms. We’ve never stayed there but you pay for parking but can play on their small miniature golf course and it is entertaining to walk around inside.

I have lived in the Orlando area for 4 years now and we are always looking for fun things to do that don’t cost much. Depending on the time of the year, you can always take a drive to the state parks. Up to April it is manatee season where you can go and see lots of them swimming in the warmer waters. Even if it isn’t that season, there is plenty to see in the state parks that are all around the area!

  We normally go to the Clearwater Beach area and the guys took the boys to one of those state parks and went canoeing….the water was REALLY low and it was like the gators were right there. Traumatized the boys a bit but its been a few years! ha! :) Thanks for the tip!

Its not totally free since it was $12 to park, but the gardens inside the Gaylord Palms are always amazing and my kids loved seeing the alligators there too.

  But how many people can you fit in one car! :) Since we have a family of 6, that makes it only $2/each! :)

There is also Downtown Disney. It’s a lot of shops, but it’s FREE to park and walk around and some of the restaurants have some pretty cool displays (dinasours, alligators, etc.). My kids’ favorite place in Downtown Disney is Legoland! They have bins of legos to build with and some other fun things that you can do (FREE).

I am visiting here at Kissimmee for the first time, and since I don’t have little ones we are not doing Disney parks this visit. I thank all for the post they are very helpful, wife and I already did the night walk in downtown Disney which was free parking :) we also went today to Clearwater Beach, which all we pay was for parking because we packed up our own food :) and I did see the Old Town entrance on the way back the first night we were here from Walmart, and since I saw the website I will be going there on Wednesday along with some of the parks that were suggested… times are rough and I rather stretch the resources in the small business that make the world go round! I don’t have anything against big corp, but I am an old timer who likes the Old School stuff :) thank you all for your suggestions they were really helpful.
