While 7 in 10 Americans say they always or almost always recycle, only 1 in 5 Americans consistently recycle in the bathroom. I’m not talking about toilet paper people, I’m talking about commonly used items in the bathroom like shampoo, lotion, and cleanser bottles, which can all be recycled! Each year we are throwing away enough 15 ounce shampoo bottles to fill 1,164 football fields, which is equivalent to 18,000 tons of plastic ending up in the landfills.
We can make a major impact on the environment by making one simple change. It could be that people simply don’t realize that these items can be recycled or it is a logistics issue. Our recycle “center” is much farther away from our bathroom than our kitchen in our household so sometimes I feel a little too lazy to make a extra trip to recycle the shampoo bottles. I try people, I try.
To help make a difference, Johnson & Johnson is launching CARE TO RECYCLE™, a recycling campaign that encourages people to recycle more items from the bathroom. The Care To Recycle™ Tumblr page, includes helpful information and tips on what can and can’t be recycled and an infographic with additional statistics on bathroom-product recycling. It also features a short video which visitors are encouraged to share to help spread the word and make the small step of recycling an even bigger one.
Here’s a few ideas on other ways you can repurpose your bathroom bottles:
Repurpose an empty plastic bottle and use as a shovel for gardening and tending to plants around the house.
Use an old plastic bottle as a way to amplify the volume of your cell phone speakers.
Repurpose your old lotion bottles and turn them into holders for charging your cell phone
Do you recycle or re-purpose your bathroom product bottles?
