webpic21 300x260 NOW CLOSED: Win It: Slow Cooker Mate Ends 3/20

I’m so excited about this product! The Slow Cooker Mate will allow you to cook your entire meal in one crockpot.

A versatile crockpot, it has removable chambers so you can cook a one pot meal or a divided meal. For those of us who rely on our crockpot to cook dinner how wonderful to have the option of cooking your side dishes in the same crockpot.

When using the divided dish, the main chamber will cook an entree for 5-6 people. The upper divided chamber will cook two dishes. Other features include a built in timer, cool touch handles, and most interesting a built in control which will automatically put it on “warm” when cooking time is complete. (I don’t know how many times my current crockpot has cooked too fast and ruined our dinner!)

Time Saving because if you are like me sometimes when cooking a crockpot dinner, I still don’t have extra time to whip up the side dishes. Money Saving because the more you eat at the home, the more money you save from not dining out!

Best of all, I have one to give away to one of you! One lucky reader will win the Slow Cooker Mate (Value $99.)

My favorite tip is to try to brown the meat before adding it to the crockpot especially for things like stew, chili); don’t just throw everything in raw. Use a bit of flour on the b eef you are browning and it will ultimately thicken the stew. Also, sauteeing the onions and/or garlic first imprives the flavor of the finished dish.

I usually prepare my favorite chili recipe (a vegetable one with bulgur) on the cookstove and then toss it in the crockpot to simmer for 8 hours.

My favorite recipe is for chili:

    2 lbs hamburger meat
1 large onion, diced or chopped
    1-2 TBS veg oil
    2 cloves garlic minced
1 can kidney beans (could add 2 if you like beans); drained and rinsed
    2 can diced tomato
    1 can tomato sauce
2 envelopes chili seasoning such as McCormick’s
(I like to use one regular and one spicy — that’s the right level for our family)

    1) brown the hamburger meat, drain and add to crock pot
    2) sautee onion in veg oil until translucent
    3) add minced garlic at the very end, sautee 30 seconds; add onion and garlic to crockpot
    4) dump in everything else (cans of beans, sauce, etc.)
    5) stir well
    6) cook on low for 6-8 hrs of high for 4-5

Even if it doesn’t look very “saucy” at first, do not add more liquid. The tomatoes and everything will cook down over time.

Serve with sour cream, shredded cheese, saltines, etc. Whatever your family likes. We like cornbread.

In college we used to throw frozen chicken breasts, cream of chicken soup, a little water, and one of those pesto packets or creamy pesto packets in to a crock pot and let it cook all day. It was a great way to come home from midterms and enjoy a meal as friends and relax when life was getting a little stressful. Sometimes we’d throw rice, broccoli, and various other vegetables into the sauce as well, but that was only if we had them on hand for whatever reason.

I got this from the wonderful $5 Dinners site recently and really enjoy it! :)
    Ingredients
    3 chicken breasts
    1/2 cup BBQ sauce
    1-2 apples, peeled and grated
    1 lemon, juiced
    6 slices bacon
    2-3 sweet potatoes
    1 cup chopped broccoli

    Directions
    1. Combine BBQ sauce with grated apple and lemon juice.
    2. Place chicken breast in crockpot, pour BBQ/apple mixture over the chicken. Wrap 2 pieces of bacon around each chicken breast. Set to low and cook for 8 hours.
    3. Cook frozen broccoli as directed on package.
    4. Slit sweet potatoes with knife or vent with fork. Bake sweet potatoes at 350 for 1 hr in baking dish with 1/4 in water. Cover with foil. Remove and let cool about 10 mins. Peel skins off of the potato and mash.
    5. Serve chicken breast with side of broccoli and sweet potatoes.
