How to Make Your Own Cooking Spray

April 24, 2013 by Briana Carter

 DIY Cooking Spray

Cut the chemicals and save money by making your own cooking spray. I have a Misto Spray bottle for my olive oil but you don’t even have to spend $9.99 on that container to do it yourself at home with a simple spray bottle. Just be sure to label it properly so you don’t confuse your homemade cleaners with your homemade cooking spray! :)

TY for the reply… mine always gets clogged so I was hoping the water could help w/that, but it hasn’t… it may help a tiny bit but it still clogs :(.

I have just used straight up canola oil in my misto for a couple of years now, and it has worked great for me. I have never had it get clogged… yet. :)

I was just looking over the instructions and it says any vegetable oil will work! :)

I have a Misto too… do you need to add water to the oil when you use a Misto too??

The Misto has it’s own instructions but I don’t remember adding water to it!

I have the Misto and Pampered Chef version, neither needs water. The special bottles are pressurized when you pump the cap, so the oil is forced out. With a regular spray bottle the oil is too thick to spray, hence adding water.
If the spray nozzle on either bottle clogs, soaking it in hot water (adding some vinegar to the water may help to dissolve any particulate bits that may be attaching to the spray mechanism). You can also fill the bottle with the vinegar/hot water and try spraying it before testing it with oil.

        Cleaning (the manufacturer’s instructions):

We always recommend washing you MISTO® using directions included in the instructions booklet to keep the internal assembly clean and working properly. Usually MISTO® will need to be cleaned approximately every 6 to 8 weeks to keep it working smoothly.
        1. Fill the MISTO® 1/2 full with hot tap water
        2. Add one drop liquid detergent and shake to mix.
        3. Pump 10-15 times
        4. Spray for ten seconds
        5. Allow the soapy water to remain in the sprayer for several hours or even overnight. This will allow it to break down any oil that has solidified in the sprayer.
        6. Rinse, repeat the sequence above with fresh hot water.
