How to Save Money During the Winter

November 1, 2013 by Briana Carter

The winter months are beautiful with all the snow and holidays in full swing. The winter months can also be extremely expensive with heating your home, throwing holiday dinner parties and buying Christmas gifts. However, there are several things that you SHOULD purchase during the winter months. Purchasing certain items during the winter can save you a lot of money!

How to Save Money During the Winter

Winter Clothing

Winter clothing is something we all need during the winter! Gloves, jackets, scarfs and boots are just some of the items we need during the winter. These items can also get pretty expensive if you have multiple children to buy for. Since kids grow so fast try not to purchase these items at full price.

Check Craigslist, children consignment stores, online sales and garage sales for affordable winter clothing. These are all great ways to find clothing without playing full-price!

Christmas Decorations

If you celebrate Christmas then you are probably aware of how much money decorations cost in the months leading up to Christmas. Purchasing your Christmas items after Christmas will save you 50 to 75%! During the holidays make a list of any Christmas items you need and start shopping the days following Christmas.

Frozen Food

March is National Frozen Food Month. Around this time you will see a lot of coupons for frozen food products in your weekly store circular. Stores will also offer deep discounts on frozen food products. This is the time to stock up on frozen food and fill up your freezer with frozen vegetables, ice cream, frozen juice and any quick frozen dinners your family eats.

Winter Vacations

Winter vacations are very popular among people either looking to go to the snow or get away from the snow. Either way taking the family on a winter vacation can be extremely expensive! If you are looking to take your family on a winter vacation make sure you don’t plan anything on Christmas Day or New Years Day. Planning your vacation on those days will dramatically increase the prices.

If at all possible travel between December 26th and December 30th. Traveling after New Year’s Day will also save you some big bucks! Keep an eye on Craigslist as vacation home owners will post cancellations at a discounted rate.

Home Renovations

If you have any home improvements or renovations on your to do list, winter is the time to get them done. Most contractors see a slow down in business during the winter months and are desperately seeking work. Hiring a contractor to do some home improvements during the winter will save you a lot of money compared to hiring a contractor during the late spring and early summer months.

Electronics

Kids love their video games and parents dread seeing the prices of a video game. It seems like all the newest and most sought after video games come out in November and December, right in time for Christmas. You probably won’t be able to find any great deals on the new release video games during this time. If possible wait until January to buy and new video games as the prices will be lower. The same holds true for computers and televisions. {Shop for Electronic Deals here.}
