Description
This casserole is not only delicious but also versatile and economical. It’s a go-to recipe in our household, especially when we want something comforting without spending a lot. Give it a try, and it might become a staple in your home too!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb sausage
- 6 eggs
- 3½ cups milk
- 1 tsp dry mustard
- 1 tsp salt
- ¾ loaf of bread (I used 5-grain wheat)
- 8 oz American cheese slices
Instructions
- Cook the sausage thoroughly in a skillet and drain any excess fat.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, dry mustard, and salt.
- Grease a 9½ x 11-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
- Layer the bottom of the dish with bread slices.
- Spread half of the cooked sausage over the bread.
- Place cheese slices over the sausage layer.
- Pour half of the egg mixture evenly over the layers.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining bread, sausage, cheese, and egg mixture.
- Cover the dish and refrigerate overnight to allow the flavors to meld. (If you’re short on time, you can bake it immediately; it still tastes great!)
- Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C).
- Bake covered for 45 minutes.
- Uncover and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the top is golden and the casserole is set.
