My aunt died from breast cancer when I was young. She was my mother’s closest sibling and even though I was too young to fully understand, I could see the pain my mother went through.

My Mom had a breast cancer scare a few years ago and I remember being scared out of my mind about just a little scare that ended up being nothing. I can’t imagine what families go through when it’s not just a scare. I am very lucky that my family is otherwise breast cancer free, though I’m not going to let my guard down!

I have a close friend (who was only 29 at diagnosis!!!) that has beat her breast cancer into remission. She is amazing and such a fighter and couldn’t be more proud of her. It doesn’t run in her family so it was quite a shock to everyone but a humbling reminder just how scary and real cancer of all kinds is

No one in my family has had breast cancer directly, but my mother always makes sure she gets checked because she’s had some scares before with lumps that ended up being noncancerous. It’s definitely an important month to bring awareness for breast cancer and the importance of getting checked!
Melissa Carlisle
