Attics are the terror of some people, and the joy of others. Whether you grew up believing attics held treasures to find or scary things to hide from you now know Organizing Your Attic is probably a must if you plan to know what is there and how to find it. Attics house everything from seasonal clothing to holiday decorations. Keeping yours orderly is a must if you plan to use it often.
Organizing Your Attic
Sort By Frequency Of Use: One thing that is really important when storing items in your attic, is to recognize that some things will rarely if ever be needed. Family heirlooms, baby clothes you can’t part with and random similar items should be stored at the farthest point possible. Those won’t be needed anytime soon. Items like seasonal clothing, holiday decorations and similar should be stored closer to your entrance for easy access.
Purge Unused Items: Sometimes attics become the catch all for junk we aren’t sure what to do with. Now is the time to sort through those random boxes and decide if you really do want to keep things. Kids clothing you saved just in case you had another child, or that artificial Christmas tree you just hate to get rid of even though you have a replacement are both items you can rid your attic of without guilt. Host a yard sale, donate or list on local sales sites for quick cash.
Hang From Rafters: Many things can easily be hung from your rafters with simple hooks or hanging systems. Things like holiday decorations, spare electrical cords and even clothing in bags are all easy to hang using up some of that space a vaulted attic might have. This takes advantage of space and creates more room to store larger boxes and things.
Label Boxes To Locate Items Easily: If you are storing boxes of clothing, decorations or memorabilia in your attic, make sure to use quality storage totes that are labeled. Not only will plastic storage totes keep your belongings safe from things like potential leaks in the roof or rodents in the attic, they will be easier to move things around. Labeling the storage boxes will make it even easier to find what you need when the time comes.
Cleaning up and organizing your attic is important for your overall household organization. When the holidays come around, you’ll want to easily find your decorations. This is especially helpful when you decorate not just for Christmas, but for all seasons and holidays. Using a few days and some elbow grease to declutter your home and organize your life is a great way to make your home more productive and even help keep you in budget this year.
