We have cleaned up the kitchen and have your refrigerator all orderly as part of the 52 Weeks to a More Organized Home/Life series, but now it is time to start Organizing Your Freezer. This is especially important if you tend to stockpile food in your freezer for future use, or if you utilize freezer meal prep on a regular basis. A few simple steps will help keep your freezer in order, food safe and your dinner table covered in great tasty and healthy meals.
Organizing Your Freezer
Purge Anything Expired Or That You Don’t Recognize: Yes, there are items that will occasionally be unrecognizable. Sadly, when in a hurry we have a habit of tossing things into the freezer without labeling it. The first rule of thumb when organizing your freezer is to check expiration dates, and purge what is out dated or unrecognizable.
Defrost Freezer: Some freezers won’t require this, but if yours does then it is time to transfer items into another freezer or ice chest with plenty of ice to keep froze and defrost your freezer.
Sort Like Items Together: This is made easier when you have shelving or at least simple baskets in your freezer. Put like items together in baskets or on specific shelves. This will make it easy to grab items as you need them without digging around in the freezer.
Make Sure Everything Is Labeled: If you are freezing food you have prepared for future use, or even things like packaging bulk meats into serving portions, etc. it is important to make sure everything is labeled well. Not only do you want to label with what it is, but the date you put it into the freezer, as well as the recommended expiration date.
Keeping your freezer organized will definitely help your meal preparation go smoothly. From organizing freezer meals for quick and easy weeknight meals, to taking advantage of bulk meat sales this will keep your family organized and in budget year round.
