Are you guilty of taking a guess on the laundry detergent dose? If so, you may be over-dosing and spending more money in the process. In a recent study, one third of adults guessed how much laundry detergent to use and one in four say they always fill the scoop or cap regardless of the instructions. WOW, this means that many of us are using more laundry detergent than we need!
P&G wants to help you become more future friendly by converting to compacted powder laundry detergents, which reduce waste, save energy, and save water with the same performance as the liquid versions.
Of course, this all saves you MONEY too!
Laundry 101
- Proper Dosing: With the new compacted powder laundry detergents, use 1/3 less detergent than previous non-compacted versions. This lower amount is reflected in a new scoop size in the compacted detergent boxes, as well as within the usage instructions included on the package.
- Sort This Way: Sort oranges with reds, purples, and bright blues; navies with blacks; and creams with tans.
- Got a stain?: Find quick, step-by-step cleaning instructions from the experts at Tide and the laundry rooms of people like you at www.laundry.com.
- Liquid Softener Know-How: To help prevent staining, avoid pouring liquid softener directly on fabrics, as it’s usually direct contact that causes spotting or staining. Instead, use the automatic dispenser in your washer. If you don’t have one, simply add your fabric softener to the rinse cycle.
- Don’t Over Dry-It: Avoid overdrying. Too much heat can set wrinkles, shrink certain cottons and wear out dark-colored fabrics.
The compacted laundry detergent is available in many of your favorite P&G brands including Tide, Cheer, Dreft, and Gain. From now, until May 31, 2011, the P&G eStore is offering $4 off when you purchase four or more P&G Future Friendly products.

My laundry tip is too not overcrowd the dryer and take the clothes out immediately after the dryer stops. It helps keep the clothes from wrinkling!!

Hang dry most of your shirts to keep the color and size! I always use the lowest heat setting needed on my dryer, helps keep the size and shape of your clothes lasting longer!

Wash in cold water when possible to save energy
Lynda
A great tip for those who over-dose the suds – if you see lots of suds during the final rinse add fabric softener (the recommended amount).
Lynda
I wash in cold water to save energy.

Just a suggestion: If you have a toploader a Downy Ball (< $2) is great. Measure liquid fabric softener and add water to dilute. Pop the top shut. Then drop in top of load after clothes when you start the washer. You don't have to keep vigil for the rinse cycle. I now have a frontloader and no longer use it but when I was doing the laundromat routine it was very helpful. They are inexpensive enough that you can get 2 so you can do more than one load at a time.
Summer
My detergent tip is to keep track of those lil measuring cups- they always seem to be floating around the dryer or laundry baskets and I end up just dumping in way more detergent than I need. Ahhhh

Wash full loads to save water and electricity.

I like to use liquid laundry detergent. My problem with over using the detergent is the measurements in the cap are very difficult to read. I would like the companys that make the detergent to make a easier to read dosing cap. In the meantime, my tip is to place colored tape on the outside of the cap and make marks to show the dosing of different sized loads for each measuring.
Thank you, Julie

If you are doing a couple loads in one day, do your most delicate load first. Dryers will heat up and dry things quicker after a few loads—so start with the lowest setting and save the highest for last!

Always sort, ck pockets, pretreat if necessary, and measure ur TIDE detergent! Remove clothes from washer as soon as cycle is complete and either hang to dry or place in dryer. If u place in dryer clean dryer filter between each load and remove and hang or fold load as soon as cycle is completed.

when drying your clothes, most of us domore than 1 load at a time, therefore, you have a load in the dryer & usually one on top the dryer. if you put your fabric softener on your wet clotes, you may end up with grease stains on your clothes when they cme out of the dryer. Take your fabric softener sheet out only when your ready to put your clothes in the dryer.
Cheryl M
I let the dryer run for 10 minutes and then take most of my shirts out to hang — this lessens the chance for shrinkage and 10 minutes in enough to get the wrinkles out so you save energy on not running the dryer as long and NOT having to iron!

My laundry tip is: to use about 1/2 of the recommended amount of detergent. My clothes come out just as clean & clean smelling as if you use your usual amount. This helps me to save money since I have 4 very dirty, stinky, sweaty boys! lol Even their baseball uniforms come out wonderfully!

My best laundry tip is to a use a “bluing” product. It is a liquid you add to your wash to make whites look whiter & other colors should look brighter from it as well.
Suzie B.
My laundry tip is :
Soak your whites in warm lemon water. Lemons are a natural bleach and will have them looking “whiter” in no time.
I soak for about 1 hour then wash in a regular cycle.

My best laundry tip is about those time when you forget that you left wet laundry in the machine – and the resulting moldy smell! My grandmother taught me to put a few cups of white vinegar in the washing machine and then wash the clothes (in hot water if you can!), then run it thru a regular cycle with detergent.

My favorite laundry tip is to use powdered Tide as a pre-treater. Just wet the clothing item, add some powder & a little more water to make a paste. Let sit and then scrub a little. It works better than any pre-treater/stain remover I’ve tried!
Maureen
My laundry tip is to Hang things on the hanger as soon as they come out of the dryer… saves a lot of time.. Love Tide!
Kelly
My tip is three-fold.
One – always put your detergent in the water and let it fill a bit before you add clothes – you will avoid spotting this way.
Two – get prewash on a stain right away, and if you aren’t doing laundry that day, use 1 part prewash to 3 parts water on the stain each day until you do laundry (or the stain disappears).
Three – hang dry as much as possible. This will keep the clothes looking vibrant and prevent shrinkage!

My laundry tip is just to pay attention. It takes an extra 2 seconds to check all pockets on an item or peek for stains. I learned my lesson after my husband threw in his work jeans with a sharpie marker in the pocket into an entire load of my oldest school clothes just purchased from Justice. Now we know that stuff isn’t cheap. I couldn’t salvage any of it! about 300.00 worth of clothes in the garbage!
