When you try these tips you can be sure you are using your essential oils in the most beneficial and safe way possible!
7 Essential Oil Safety Tips
Always store your oils safely
Essential oil bottles may be appealing to children and pets. Always store your essential oils as you would medications. Be sure to keep them up high or even locked away where curious children and pets can’t get into them. Should your child or pet ingest any oil or if you suspect they may have, contact poison control immediately.
Avoid certain areas of the body
Essential oils should not be used on sensitive skin and should never go in the eyes or ears. Avoid private areas on the body as well. You never want to add undiluted oils to bath water where they can affect and enter these areas
Take caution in the sun
Some oils can make skin sensitive when exposed to the sun. This would include bergamot and citrus based oils. Do not expose your skin to the sun for 48 hours after using such oils. This precaution can help reduce the risk or burns, flare ups, and other sensitivity issues.
Keep oils away from flame and heat sources
Essential oils like any oil are flammable. Because of this you never want to use essential oils near an open flame or hot heat source. Always store your oils in a cool place, and avoid using oils in tea light burners where they could drip and catch fire.
Take care when using oils on children
Before using any essential oils on children consult their doctor. Children may have sensitivities to some oils, and some oils should be avoided on children all together. While oils can be quite beneficial for kids, taking a few precautions by consulting a doctor never hurts.
Keep oils labeled
If you make your own blends or store oil in bottles/rollers, you should always mark the contents. It is important to know what is in each bottle so you can be sure you are using it appropriately. A simple piece of masking tape and a marker is all you need to label the bottle.
Consult a doctor if you have special health needs
If you are pregnant or have a medical diagnosis, consult with your doctor before using any oils. Some oils may not be ideal for your medical situation, and other oils may need to be used with caution. Getting a second opinion is a great way to be sure you are using oils safely.
