Homemade Hot Cocoa Recipe

It is cold here right now and the kids have been playing outside in the snow quite a bit. They love to warm up with a nice warm mug of hot cocoa when they come inside. Actually, they expect it to be ready and waiting for them.  This recipe is simple and delicious! Top with marshmallows and whipped cream for a even sweeter treat.

Most of these ingredients you may already have in your home!

Hot Cocoa Ingredients

Mix cocoa, sugar, salt and water in medium pan and bring to boil over medium heat. Boil for 3 minutes. Add milk and evaporated milk and continue stirring.

Do not let milk boil or cocoa will scald. When temperature is hot enough for your tastes, transfer to mugs. Add Whipped Cream, Marshmallows or Fluff or ALL as desired.

Adding to an old-fashioned hot cocoa recipe could make it even more delightful! Here are a few ways to enhance the experience of making and serving this nostalgic treat:

  1. Flavor Boosts:
    • Add a dash of cinnamon, nutmeg, or even pumpkin spice for a cozy, seasonal twist.
    • A splash of vanilla extract or a hint of peppermint extract adds a festive flavor to each sip.
    • For a bit of heat, stir in a pinch of cayenne pepper for Mexican-inspired cocoa.
  2. Creamy Toppings:
    • Top with whipped cream or marshmallows, and sprinkle with chocolate shavings or crushed peppermint for extra texture.
    • Add a drizzle of caramel or chocolate syrup for a luxurious touch.
  3. Garnish Ideas:
    • Serve with a cinnamon stick or candy cane as a stirrer.
    • Include a small dish of toppings, such as mini marshmallows, crushed toffee, or cookie crumbles, for a fun DIY hot cocoa bar.
  4. Make it Dairy-Free:
    • Swap out regular milk for oat, almond, or coconut milk for a dairy-free version that still tastes rich and creamy.
  5.  Twist:
    • For adults, consider a splash of Bailey’s Irish Cream, Kahlua, or peppermint schnapps to turn this cocoa into a cozy evening treat.

These add-ons turn a simple hot cocoa recipe into a personalized experience, perfect for cold nights, holiday gatherings, or simply indulging in a classic treat with a twist! Find the base recipe and more tips on BargainBriana.com.
