Are you looking for an easy way to save money on your food bill? Stocking up and storing foods when the prices are low can save you a little and help keep your family fed when funds are low. Check out this list of foods that will freeze fairly well to stretch your budget.
Rice and Beans
Stocking up on dry beans saves you money over canned and dry beans freeze very well. You can buy a bag of dry beans and freeze them then soak and cook them — so much cheaper and better than canned!
With rice, you can also freeze those bags of dry, uncooked rice, but if you want to save a bundle of time, cook it before freezing.
Baked Goods
If you enjoy your baked goods, you can certainly freeze them! Baked goods such as breads, cakes, pies, bagels, and muffins all do great when stored in the freezer. You can also freeze raw or cookie dough or baked cookies, pizza crusts that are raw or baked, and quick breads and yeast breads already baked or still in batter or dough form.
Meats (Including Poultry and Fish)
Raw meats — including poultry and fish — are great for the freezer. For longer storage, though, raw is better because cooked meat can become very dry and runs the risk of freezer burn much faster. Otherwise, all of your favorite meats freeze quite well.
Butter and Margarine
You can freeze your butter and margarine easily enough and rest assured that they freeze very well.
Potatoes
Potatoes that have been cooked freeze really well. Don’t try to freeze uncooked potatoes as they will turn black.
Pasta
Pasta can freeze well, but it will become a bit mushier. The trick is to cook it for only about three quarters of the recommended cooking time if you plan to freeze it. Yay for undercooked pasta!
Eggs
If you have an abundance of raw eggs, you can freeze them up for use later. The trick for this is to remove the egg from the shell and mix a bit of salt or sugar with it before freezing. A handy little trick is to use an ice cube tray and plop a raw egg with a bit of salt or sugar into each cube. Freeze then put the frozen eggs into a freezer bag or other container for use later. Scrambled eggs can freeze pretty well, but boiled eggs — not so much. They tend to get rubbery.
Freezing foods correctly can save you some money and bolster your stored foods stockpile. Plan to make use of your freezer and stretch your food dollars with items that will keep well for awhile frozen.
