If you’re planning an outing or a trip with a toddler, you know that it won’t be an easy trip. Having a toddler along means a little extra planning, strategy, and patience. Check out these tips to help you have the best trip possible with your toddler.
Tips for Traveling with a Toddler
Plan Extra Travel Time
Even a short trip can take longer when you have a toddler in tow. Be sure to plan for extra travel time in case you need to stop to clean up messes, calm a fussy toddler or have rest stops.
Bring Plenty of Car Seat Friendly Activities
Your toddler will be a captive audience during a trip, and since toddlers generally have very short attention spans, you will need to bring plenty of things to keep her occupied. Toddlers love small things that they can hold and play with so look for small toys and figurines that they can handle and play with.
Round up a few small purses, zippered makeup bags and other bags to stick small toys in. Toddlers love to open up things like this and find the treasures inside. You may also want to bring some washable crayons and small notepads for toddler artwork.
Remember that toddlers love things that are small (but not small enough to be choking hazards) and easy for them to handle. Be sure to pack plenty of activities and toys that you can change out when they start to get bored.
Pack Lots of Snacks
One thing that toddlers like to do is eat, and a hungry toddler is not a fun traveling companion. Pack plenty of small snacks like crackers, apple slices, sippy cups with water, and other snacks that won’t be super messy. Put snacks into small, plastic containers to keep them handy and in order.
Keep Wipes and Extra Clothing Handy
Whether you are going on a long trip or just a short one, you will need to bring wipes and extra clothing for your toddler. Don’t pack everything away in the suitcases and luggage. Keep the toddler’s things close at hand so you can grab wipes for quick cleanup and a clean set of clothes in case you need them.
Plan for Stops and Exercise
Toddlers can become very antsy when they have to sit still for long periods of time. Antsy in turn can become cranky and disorderly. Plan to make stops so your toddler can get out of the car and get a little exercise.
Traveling with a toddler requires a little more planning and of course, patience. Don’t be afraid to go on a trip with your toddler, take extra time to plan accordingly and keep in mind the needs of the little one as you travel.
