Five Tips To Help Avoid Food Waste

Food waste in a country like ours is rather silly. When you have people starving and good food is tossed away like a used dish rag, it is time for a change. Those changes have to start somewhere, so why not with all of us? Here are five tips to get the ball rolling on how to avoid food waste:

Five Tips To Help Avoid Food Waste

Properly Store Leftovers

Leftovers are wasted like crazy and the vast majority of them time, it is because we either store them wrong or forget to store them at all before they go bad. This is one step that is worth the extra time in the kitchen. When you prepare a meal, put away the extras right away in a storage container and properly refrigerate as needed. The same goes for leftover food after a meal. The quicker you get it put away, the fresher it will be. Use these leftovers creatively in recipes throughout the coming days or simply have a leftovers day each week!

Cook Only What You Need

Rather than have to fool with leftovers, why not simply cook what you actually need? This would help a great deal towards keeping your food costs down and you would rarely have food waste.

Buy Fresh Every Day

This is a bit unusual and many families don’t have the time, but if you have a store you shop close by it works. If you buy freshly each day from the store, you can get only what you need. The odds of buying something you are not going to use when you are buying for one day are very low. This is also great because you can buy expiring or last minute deals on meats and eat them right away.

Make a Compost Pile

Compost is wonderful because you are sending the food back to the earth to create more food. This food might feed the plants you are growing to feed yourself or the animals of the area….in most cases both. Consider a compost pile and you will enjoy great success with eliminating food waste.

Share Your Extras

Finally, sharing your extra food goes a very long ways towards getting rid of food waste and it helps out other people. Why not pack up that extra spaghetti and take it to the fella on the corner? Helping out our fellow men and women will eliminate food waste quickly. Nobody should ever go hungry in this richest of societies. Share your extra and you will get far more than just savings on food waste.
