There are several different ways to stay in shape. Today, I’ll focus on those interested in joining a local health club. You may be wondering, how do I decide what gym to join? Or how do I get the most out of my gym?
You need to decide what you want from your health club and overall exercise routine. Try to think of all the possible ‘excuse’ factors like location, hours, activities, members, etc. You could make a list of features you would like your gym to offer. For example, if you are a woman who would like to work-out with all women, you may want to join Curves. Or if you want to be able to work-out during odd hours you may want to join Anytime Fitness where its members are allowed access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Most health clubs list their services on their websites, but others may have extra programs which you can learn more about by inquiring within or simply calling their front desk.
If you are already a member at a gym, you may have forgotten or are unaware of some of the free services offered with your membership. Most health clubs offer pre-exercise screenings, fitness tests, body composition tests, group fitness classes, personal training, small group training, etc. Ask your fitness supervisor for more information and prices on these topics.
New or not, always remember that gym supervisors are your friends! Talk to them! Ask them to teach or review proper technique on the fitness equipment. This can help prevent injuries and maximize your work-out. Or you can talk to them about any other concerns you may have. These supervisors are also there to ‘spot’ you on machines if needed and they love to talk about fitness so they can be wonderful motivators!
