How to Teach Kids to do Laundry

March 9, 2016 by Briana Carter

This post was sponsored by all® and Snuggle Scent Boosters® and Dollar General, and I was compensated to write it. Regardless, what I have written is my own opinion and experience, and I hope you find it of use.

Teaching Kids to Do Laundry

Laundry is one of those things that people don’t always love doing, but it’s necessary. Allowing kids to do their own laundry not only teaches them responsibility but also instills in them a love for helping others. Not to mention, there’s always lots of laundry to do, so why not start teaching your kids now?

How to Teach Kids to do Laundry

Determine the right age: Some kids are ready to start doing laundry at an earlier age than others. Only you can determine the right age for your child to start doing laundry. Getting them involved as soon as they are interested in helping is key! Even a child under three can help put clothing in the dryer from the washing machine when someone older gets the clothing out the washing machine, hands the clothing to the little one to place in the dryer. Yes, this make take you a few more minutes but it is totally worth it in the long run.

Kids Doing Laundry

Letting go of perfection can be a difficult thing. My youngest daughter started helping fold her own laundry at just around three years old. (Pictured above)

Walk your kids through the laundry process: Don’t just tell your child to “go do laundry” and expect them to understand how it’s done. Walk your child through the laundry process. Teach them as many times as necessary to help them understand how laundry works.

Make doing laundry fun: Turn on some music and let laundry be a fun chore for your kids. As an adult, it’s become monotonous to do laundry because it needs done all of the time. You can make laundry fun for your kids! Be creative. We love to turn on our favorite shows while we are folding clothes! Being able to watch shows on a tablet means we can fold clothes in any room.

Use the right laundry tools: In our home, when kids do the laundry, we make it as kid friendly as possible. We use the all® Free Clear Mighty Pacs in our home. I love the all® Free Clear Mighty Pacs for when my kids do laundry because they don’t have to measure so we don’t get a mess made or have to worry about them using too much product!

Make the laundry smell good: In our home, we are busy and that means smelly clothes. I love the Snuggle Scent Boosters® lavender joy to ensure our clothes smell good. This is the kid’s favorite part because they also love the smell of the Lavender Joy.

Sensitive skin: There are a few people in our home who have sensitive skin, so when it’s their laundry day, they use all® Free Clear Laundry Detergent. We love this laundry detergent because it is #1 Recommended detergent brand by dermatologists, allergists, and pediatricians for sensitive skin. I try to teach our kids the importance of making sure those with sensitive skin get their laundry washed with the proper detergent. Another reason it’s a great tool to teach kids to wash laundry on their own (they know exactly which detergent is theirs).

I also love taking our kids shopping for our laundry supplies. We go to Dollar General and they can help pick out all of the following items on our laundry list.
