Do you ever find yourself digging through a stack of papers to find that bill you know was due this week? This week focus on Organizing Your Mailbox for his reason. Perhaps it is more like organizing your stack of mail, than your mailbox itself, but both apply. Getting on top of your mail will help you to keep your finances in order, as well as not miss out on important news.
Organizing Your Mailbox
Create A Mail Station: Set up a place in your office or entry way for mail to be placed each day. Rather than tossing it just anywhere, if you keep it in the same place consistently you will be less likely to lose track or forget it.
Assign Everyone A “Box”: Whether you use folders, a small box for each person or a hanging filing system assign everyone in your home a box for their mail. It’s their job to check those boxes regularly. By sorting directly into your boxes, you’ll make sure you are doing your part, and nobody will complain you didn’t get their mail to them on time.
Sort Daily: Don’t let it pile up. To keep your mail organized you really must stay on top of it daily. As you come in the door with your mail, go immediately to your mail station and sort. Keep a trash can nearby to toss junk mail in, so you remove the clutter immediately.
Sort By Due Date Or Urgency: In your own box, make sure to sort by due date or urgency. Attend to urgent items same day if possible. By keeping the most urgent items on top, you are more likely to attend to them before due dates pass.
With everything else in your home coming together and becoming more organized, this step to get your mail in order is important. Organizing your mailbox will ensure you stay on top of you bills, commitments and paperwork on a regular basis.
