We hope you are taking advantage of one of our favorite savings tips by creating a gift closet. If you want to get the ultimate savings on holiday gifts and birthday gifts, then a gift closet it the way to go. Organizing A Gift Closet is a simple way to make sure you are using this method the best you can. By adding items to it throughout the year, you are easily able to shave hundreds of dollars from your gift budget while giving your friends and family amazing holiday gifts.
Organizing A Gift Closet
If you don’t already have a gift closet, now is the time to create one. A spare bedroom closet is a great place to add some shelving to store gift items you purchase on deep discount year round. You can also invest in underbed storage totes for this purpose. If you are buying for your children too, make sure to disguise or keep those items behind lock and key just in case.
Arrange By Age: One of the easiest ways to arrange a gift closet is by age group. Toys and gifts for preschool and younger go on on shelf. Grade school aged would go on another shelf. Teenagers, young adults and adults would all go on other shelves. You could also go farther and separate items by male or female or household.
Sort By Holiday Or Event: We keep items separated by what they would be good gifts for. I have a shelf for teachers gifts that includes multi-purpose items like candles, hand lotions, stationary, gift cards and similar items. Another would be for specific to holiday items you have picked up on clearance after the holiday is over. We use this for surprise gifts around Valentine’s Day, Easter baskets, eggs and even Christmas shirts or decorations.
Rotate Items That Could Expire: Sometimes you will find great deals on food baskets or lotions and perfumes after holidays. Some of these items have great long shelf lives that will keep them fresh for another year. Other items have short expiration dates. Break down gift baskets and kits to use the items at an earlier date than the holiday they were purchased around so they won’t go to waste.
Update List Of Needs: One handy trick to staying organized and in budget is to keep a simple list of what you have on hand already. When you are shopping throughout the year, it can be easy to forget you already bought 10 bottles of lotion. Update your list to reflect what you have on hand currently in your now orderly and organized gift closet. From here on out, add to the list each time you add to your closet.
Creating an organized gift closet will help you save tons of money on everything from your big holiday gift needs, down to the little random kids birthday parties your child is asked to attend year round. Take advantage of things you see on sale at great prices year round. The best deals are often found on clearance shelves, and will fit perfectly into your recently organized gift closet.
