To me the most important part of a lifestyle is being active every day, even if that just means going for a walk or chasing my daughter around the park for a while I am definitely healthier when I take time to get up and move around.

Start a diet (or eating healthier) right as you do a big shopping trip – so much easier to eat healthier when you have a lot of good food choices in the house (and a lot of the bad ones gone.)

I so want to win this!

Don’t ban your favorite “junk” foods- just limit the quantity. That way, you never feel deprived- but you don’t go overboard on calories or fat!

27 Linda B February 13, 2009 at 9:18 am

Getting daily exercise and having fruit instead of “junk” food for snacking is of course very important but for me getting enough sleep is most important. After a good nights sleep it is much easier to resist unhealthy habits.

My healthy, nutritional diet tip is in two parts. First, use a smaller plate so that it appears that you have more food. Second, eat a monounsaturated fatty acid at every meal. (avacado, olives, olive oil, peanut butter, walnuts, peanuts, flaxseed oil, the list goes one..)

41 Melissa February 13, 2009 at 11:32 am

I almost always take the stairs when I go places. I also do exercises with my 6 month old that are playful for her but build my muscles.

42 Lori Z. February 13, 2009 at 11:36 am

I have little ones and my general rule is that I eat when they eat. I eat what they eat–things that are healthy, dehydrated kale, carrots, fruit, etc. If I go to grab something bad, I know that they’re going to ask for some, and I don’t want to get into the “if you’re having some, why can’t I?” debate.

43 gahome2mom February 13, 2009 at 11:39 am

Drink plenty of water. Beer, Sodas and Tea do not count as water. They dehydrate you more. I don’t drink beer, just tossed that in there. :)

We’ve been really watching the amount of sugar and fructose syrup in things we eat/drink – especially for the kids. We also have had veggies be a big part of our snacking since the kids were very young – now carrots & peppers are one of their favorite snacks! Leading by example has worked great for us!!

120 Nancy February 14, 2009 at 11:15 am

We buy fresh fruit in season and keep it washed and ready to eat either in a bowl on the kitchen counter or table or in the refrigerator (depending on the storage needs of the fruit). Fresh fruit in season is less expensive and since it’s in our sight and ready to eat, it’s easiest to snack on something healthy like the seasonal fruit!

Exercise every day, even if it is only 1o minutes, every little bit helps!

144 Karen February 15, 2009 at 5:52 pm

I have been replacing soda and juice with WATER! :)

145 Kristi February 15, 2009 at 8:29 pm

As crazy as it sounds, the way we stay healthy is to eat small meals throughout the day instead of three big ones. Keeping blood sugar even makes us all healthier.

Just keep your goal in sight. Whether it’s to lose weight or just be healthier remembering why you are doing it helps you get through the tough parts.

147 Nicole February 15, 2009 at 10:59 pm

I go to Jazzercise at least 3 times/week and eat lots of fruits and veggies.

Staying away from all of the wonderful temptations out there is probably the best thing I can do to stay healthy. I love junk food and I love to snack. I have to make sure that I am choosing snacks that are healthy for me.

I walk my dogs at least 4 times a wek. It not only provides exercise but also gives me a chance to take a break from all the hustle and bustle of life.

157 Lauren February 16, 2009 at 12:46 pm

In eating healthy, always remember that the low fat/low salt/ low sugar versions of junk food are still junk food and should still be eaten in moderation! it is easy to think they’re healthy foods with all the advertising these days!

158 Christie February 16, 2009 at 1:50 pm

I’ve replaced most items with a healthy alternative such as pasta with whole wheat. My kids love the taste and won’t go back to eating regular pasta again.

Every afternoon for lunch I have this yogurt along with some cottage cheese, maybe a piece of additional fruit, some water and then a walk around the block. I sit at a computer for hours on end in the office, this keeps me phycially active, and I’m feeding my body what it needs to maintain throughout the day.
