Wax melts are the thing to have now instead of regular candles. You can place them in an electric melter of some kind (either on the wall or on the table) and they will give your house a nice fragrance without the risk of a fire like a candle.
But like anything, the cost of the wax melts can add up if you use them frequently and since they are small and melt quickly one wax melt cube is easy to go through in a day.
Luckily it’s so easy to make your own wax candle melts! These can be used in any electric melter and can be customized as needed. Here’s what you need to get started:
- Wax (either leftover old wax from an old candle that you liked the smell of or fresh new wax from the craft store or from Amazon.com)
- Essential oils. I personally only use Young Living Essential Oils and you can read more about why over at this post on How to Get Started with Essential Oils or you can order directly from my Young Living Essential Oils page.
- Small candy mold (something like this would work.)
All you need to do is make sure that you find a mold that is small, so the cubes you make (can be any shape) will fit inside your melter and not let it overflow. Some candy molds would work great for this since they are generally small.
Melt the wax that you’ve decided to use. With old candle wax you can simply melt it, with new wax you will want to melt it and then use a few drops of essential oil to scent it. Make sure to melt it carefully on a double boiler on the stovetop. And old tin can sitting in a saucepan filled with a few inches of water (wax goes in the tin can) works great.
Once you have your wax melted, simply pour into your mold and allow it to dry. So not try and pop it out of the mold until it’s completely dry and set up. You can speed along this process by putting it in the fridge.
And that’s it! You can brand new wax melts for your electric melter that you made yourself!

I use the package the store bought melts came in as a mold for my homemade ones. You can also use a few of the Downy Crystals for a great clean smell throughout your home.
