Weird Marketing: Free Ice Cream with Lean Cuisine Purchase

February 8, 2009 by Briana Carter

leancuisinebadmarketingBuy 5 Lean Cuisine Entrees & Get One Edy’s Ice Cream, Haagen Daz, or Dibs FREE with purchase. Ironically, I remember laughing about something similar in another store’s circular last year.

Any thoughts on the marketing strategy behind this?

Maybe they think that customers will decide to get the ice cream but need to cut calories in other places. Thus, creating an increased dependence on “diet foods” like Lean Cuisine…?

With all the calories & fat you’re saving eating that Lean Cuisine, you can afford to indulge in ice cream! haha

Maybe they think we’ll all be “good” and get the fat free sorbet. Not the ooey gooey caramel cone stuff…or did I just give away my secret? I think it’s weird but brilliant, because I think that my mindset is, I’ve done good so I can afford to splurge now. Totally untrue but still a smart idea.

Maybe it is perfect marketing…tempt us with the ice cream so we will NEED to keep eating lean cuisines????

It’s probably the same marketing strategy that put the frozen desserts in the same aisle as the “diet” food at my Kroger :-).
