Independence Day isn’t very far off. It’s time to start making plans for a frugal Fourth of July. Celebrating the nation’s birthday is a great way to spend time with friends and family. That doesn’t mean the celebration has to be extravagant or expensive, though. Traditional celebrations include fireworks, backyard barbecues with hot dogs and corn on the cob and a whole lot of fun. None of that has to cost a fortune.
Party Supplies
Since the colors for the Fourth of July are red, white, and blue, this is a no-brainer. Visit your local dollar store and stock up on a variety of paper products like plates and napkins as well as utensils and cups in these three colors. There is no need to buy specially designed Fourth of July paper goods. Those will cost more. The 3, solid- colored products will give the same effect at a much lower price. {Check out our store deals for the latest deals.}
Make It a Potluck
If you are hosting the festivities, make it a potluck. Select the food items you are willing to supply and ask your guests to each bring something else that will be needed. You can dole out assignments for appetizers, desserts, snacks, and drinks. Try coordinating the menu items and choosing things that are red, white or blue to carry the decorating theme through, too. {Budget Party Foods Ideas}
Play Some Games
Since most people spend the Fourth of July outdoors, this can be a great time to get in a little physical activity. Frugal games would include water balloon fights, wheelbarrow races, tug of war pulls, and potato sack races. Just because the games are old-fashioned doesn’t mean they aren’t fun.
Look for Free Events
Many communities go all out for the Fourth of July. Some host parades while others host carnivals and fairs. Check to see if your community or one nearby is hosting such an event. Some communities sponsor concerts or dances as well. Often, admittance or attendance is free. Eat at home before you go so you won’t be tempted to buy expensive fair foods. {Indy Folks – Check out Indy with Kids for some ideas!}
Take It to the Beach
Instead of hosting a backyard BBQ, take your gang to the beach. Most beaches are free or charge only a nominal admittance fee. Pack a lunch and drinks. Don’t forget the sunscreen! Bring some toys like beach balls, rafts, Frisbees and maybe even a volley ball net and ball. Enjoy the sounds of the water and the warmth of the sun. Check to see if the lake or beach is providing fireworks later that night. The spectacle can be quite dazzling over the water.
Take in a Fireworks Display
The fireworks display is usually the climax of any Fourth of July celebration. Many states do not allow fireworks to be used by anyone without a license or permit. Fireworks displays are put on by many different communities and organizations. Check your local newspaper for listing of dates and places for fireworks displays. Most are free. Depending on the locations and topical geography or the areas, you may be able to watch from your front porch or backyard.
