Ways to Plan Your New Year’s Resolutions

Ways to Plan Your New Year's Resolutions

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, some people might not put much thought or planning into making or keeping them. If you’re hoping to really keep your New Year’s resolutions this coming year, you may need to plan out how you are going to follow through and make them happen. Checkout these tips and ideas for planning your resolutions this year.

Write It Down

By far the best way to plan out your New Year’s resolutions is to write everything down. Not only does writing out your list of resolutions help you focus on each one, it also helps you to really think about how to make them happen.

As you write your list, jot down notes and ideas about how to make your resolutions work out. It’s easy to say exercise more, but take your list a step further by writing out a plan to make that happen. Will you buy a gym membership? Will you start walking or running every day? Will you buy equipment for your home? Write down your ideas along with your list.

Give Yourself Deadlines

On your calendar, mark deadlines for certain resolutions. This will give you some motivation to make them happen. Set alerts on your smartphone to let you know when you hit one month before a deadline, then a week, then a day. This can help keep you on track as you pursue your goals.

Be Realistic About What You Can and Can’t Do

As you are working on your resolution list, your plan will only succeed if you are realistic. Writing down your resolutions may be the best plan to make things work, but realism will help keep you on track. Instead of resolving to lose 50 pounds, set a smaller goal that you know you can meet. If you overshoot then you’re that much ahead — and think of the motivation you will have!

Share Resolutions With Loved Ones

It’s true that we all get by with a little help from our friends. It’s especially true with New Year’s resolutions. Share your goals with some loved ones so they can cheer you on and hold you accountable when the New Year starts.

Keep Your Written List Handy

Your written list of resolutions and ideas to make them work won’t do you any good if they’re not accessible. Keep your list handy so you can consult with it frequently and make any additional notes as the year goes on.

Planning out your resolutions means you have a better chance of actually keeping them. Instead of throwing out a few haphazard ideas for improving your life in the coming year, make serious resolutions then create a plan to keep them.
