I grew up in a household where my father had to watch his sodium intake. You would be amazed at how little you really need to add salt to dishes. Mom always said the only exception was some baking goods.

Smart tips ~ I tend to make extra just in case one of my 3 teenage daughters brings home company. We are big on leftovers & usually I make larger meals on the weekends. Tuesdays are our leftovers night so that I can clean out the fridge. I buy in bulk when it comes to meats, separate them into meal size freezer bag portions. I only buy meat when its on sale or at our local Sam’s Club. I read & love so many of the other suggestions posted! Many I do but some I’ll be trying in the near future! Thanks!

I cook roaster chickens in the Crockpot with just a splash of lemon and some garlic and let it cook all day. The chicken falls off the bone and has excellent flavor plus it’s super easy!

Cooking tip: I add a half pound of cooked ground beef to a box (or package) of spanish rice before cooking the rice. Add about an extra quarter cup of water than what the boxed recipe calls for. A complete meal in one dish – and tastes good too.

My food tip is to cook as many meals in a crock pot as possible on the weekend. The food we cook on the weekends is usually the type of meals that can be frozen and then heated up during the week after hubby gets off work. We never cook long drawn out meals during work days!

I plan a month’s worth of food at one time and cook all my chicken (in the oven) and beef at one time, separating them into bags with other freezable ingredients. Then I just take the bag out the night before and add whatever needs to be added. Very fast!

To double the amount of your butter used for spreading, simply whip it with a small amount of warm water until it’s light and fluffy. This isn’t ideal for baking recipes that need a specific fat amount, but it’s great for spreading on your bread or corn-on-the-cob. Just keep it in the refrigerator, and it should stay light.

Smart cooking tip – I buy meat in bulk when it’s a good deal. When I get home I put the meat into single serving ziploc bags before freezing so I don’t overeat and don’t ruin the portions I’m not ready to use.
I also make meals that are larger (lasagna) that make for wonderful leftovers so I spend less time cooking.

Chopping up my veggies as soon as I get home from the store means I actually use them in lots of dishes. Somehow having to prepare them later equates to not using them at all. I find we eat so many more veggies with all of our meals this way and we don’t waste fresh food!

smart cooking tip: To stretch a pound of lean ground beef or turkey farther (for instance, in tacos), I stir in a bag of cooked brown rice (boil in the bag). Not only does the brown rice add fiber and make it more filling, but we get an extra meal out of the meat this way.
