One of the reasons that families enjoy camping so much is because it is an inexpensive way to vacation. Yet families still spend more than they need to. A few frugal camping tips can take the family bank account a long way.
Use Tents
Tents are far less expensive than any other item you might camp in. An RV or travel trailer may be more convenient, but far more expensive. With an RV or travel trailer you will have to pay more for gas as well as a higher rate to camp in a campground. Aside from that, using modern facilities and having access to technology kind of takes away from the whole camping experience. Keep your tent in good repair and it will last you for years. If you do have problems with it, you can find patch kits, stakes, and other tent supplies at just about any store that sells camping gear. {Shop best deals on tents on Amazon.}
Invest in Camping Dinnerware
If you plan to camp a lot, but some dinnerware made for camping instead of paper plates. This way you only have to spend the money once. Keep all of your gear together so all you have to do is load it up and go. You can use cast iron pans on the fire pit as well as other cookware made especially for camping. Take an old grate off of an old grill to have a grate to cook on over your campfire.
Rent Primitive Space
This is a good time to let the family unplug. Primitive space does not offer electric or running water. It is the most inexpensive camping space you can rent. You can get the best value by camping during the week instead of the weekend as well. You will probably have a fire during the evening anyhow, so you won’t need lights. Electronics can be charged using the car charger, but you are better off to just leave those at home.
Visit Small Campgrounds
Some of the larger campgrounds have more features, but are a lot more expensive. Some of them have so many features that it isn’t even like camping at all. Small campgrounds don’t have as many modern features, but there is still plenty to do. You can walk trails, swim, fish, join in group activities, and many other things that will keep the family happy and busy.
Bring Your Own Activities
Pack up the bikes, chess board, and fishing poles to create your own camping fun. If the kids don’t like to fish, they can explore the banks while you dip your line in the water. Sometimes campgrounds charge extra for activities, so you are always better off to bring your own just in case.
The more of your own items you can bring, the more frugal your camping trip will be. This includes firewood. However, be sure that there is no out of county ban on firewood before you bring your own in. Some places discourage bringing your own firewood to the campground because of non-local diseases and insects.
