One of my favorite things about summertime is the outdoor concert season. I worked at a venue near my home town during high school and college and I LOVED it. I really enjoyed being outdoors, seeing big shows for free, people watching, supervising camping, interacting with vendors, talking with fans and co-workers, and of course ALMOST meeting my crush, George Strait! Although fitness may be the last thing on your mind when getting ready for a concert, there are some things you can do to stay fit & safe while having fun!
- Use a concert as an incentive or reward for working hard all winter and spring. Concerts can be great workout motivation. You could use a big night out with the girls as motivation to push through workouts, working yourself up for the big day(s).
- Limit alcoholic beverages. Save calories and money by limiting your drinks at the show
- Don’t smoke! Although it may be tempting, pass on the cigs. You’ll be getting enough of a contact high via second and third-hand smoke. If you’re sensitive to smoke, choose a pavilion seat or other non-smoking area at your venue.
- Walk around during intermission to increase your step count for the day.
- Stay hydrated with plenty of water
- Wear sunscreen
- Some venues allow you to bring a small bag of snacks. If so, pack something small and healthy to avoid over-eating and over-spending
- Don’t go alone- Concerts tend to be a busy place. Be sure to have a friend or two with you at all times
- Remember where you park. Save time and stress by making a mental note of where you parked before the show
- Have an emergency plan. It’s a good idea to have an emergency meeting spot in case someone gets split up from the group. Also, find the on-site first aid tent before you start drinking, just in case!
- Avoid the mosh-pit (need I say any more?)
