My Coupon Kings…

February 7, 2009 by Briana Carter

My little Coupon Kings! One afternoon, the boys helped me clip some loose coupons I had acquired.  Eli, who is only 4 also wanted to help but I was worried about his cutting skills. So I gave him some expired inserts to play with. He surprised me by not completely destroying all of them. However, he only wants to clip items that he wants me to buy and was clipping the pictures instead of the coupons. Overall, they did a great job and had fun helping with the coupons in the process!

Do you involve your children in your couponing?

Fire him. {giggles} I did get an email from another reader who said she gives a % back of her grocery savings to her kids when they help her clip. They are a little older, though – I think teenagers. So money probably motivates them a little more.

lucky duck! I’ve tried to get my older son to help me clip coupons but he messes up on purpose so I fire him. I don’t know how he figured out that would work, he’s only six years old!

I used to do it all by myself but am now trying to include my stepson in the process. He’s almost 15 so I want him to get into frugal shopping/living for when he’s on his on. He has been impressed in the past with my shopping trips. This weekend I had him help me file the coupons in my binder. I cut them and he filed them. I did educate him some about being able to use store coupons and manufacturer coupons together. I plan on making sure he’s with me on my next shopping trip.

I love it! DD is 5 & she helps me all the time – the key is to get them away from her before she breaks out her stamps though!

I even make coupon cutting part of my kids chores. I figure everyone can help in this process since it’s like a part time job! Most times they don’t mind and I don’t overdue it. Sometimes they even ask if there are any coupons to cut. We give the three year old the scraps to chop up. He says “mama, I wanna cut OOOOpons too!”

My daughters with disabilities have refined their fine motor skills over the years by practicing cutting my coupons. One of the consequences for misbehavior for a defiant teenager was having to cut Mom’s coupons!

My kids like to help me sort them. I cut them all out but they get to help organize them and then help find the ones that match the sale papers.

My three year old has recently discovered that there are some of the blinkies at her level, next to the cheese! She loves to keep going back for more and more : )

agreed, although my little ones are OLD. Oldest will be 16 next month, omgosh! But yes, the entire family is well versed in the doubling policy for each store we go to, where to find blinkies… and what constitutes a good blinkie. Most active in the couponing are Bear (13 daughter) and Tasha (15 daughter)… the boys are more into legos and stuff…

My girl is 7 and can cut them really well, but like your youngest, she only wants to cut coupons for item that she wants to buy!

Just like Amber, my boys always ask ” do you have a coupon for this?” because they know I rarely buy anything without a coupon! I love that they are learning to be frugal at a young age.

I sure do. My 4 yr old son will ask me to buy something and then ask if there is a coupon to use to buy it!

Absolutely. My 2 boys go with me every weekend. They’re learning valuable skills and don’t even know it. :)

I give my 2 year old daughter expired ones to play with. She love to show people her “kaypons”.
