Where and how we spend our money these days is a big deal and particularly so on things that we constantly have to replace. Clothing costs are particularly frustrating when they cost a fortune but wear out in no time flat. You can make clothes last longer if you are willing to take the steps needed. Clothes only last a long time if you invest in them even after spending your money. Here are some tips to guarantee long life for your clothes.
Tips to Make Your Clothing Last Longer
Think Cool, Dark and Dry
Storing your clothes properly can really make a huge difference in how long they last. The best places to store your clothes would fit three specific criteria; cool, dark and dry. The sun is your enemy when you store clothing because it will fade and weaken the fibers. Moisture is obviously a danger and it also attracts insects. Temperatures that are too hot will also drive the moisture levels up and cause mildew among other things. Make sure you store your products in a place that meets all three of these adjectives.
Never Use Plastic
When you get your clothes from the dry cleaners and it is held in plastic, take it out right away. If you store it that way, the fabric will suffer and possibly begin to take on moisture. This can lead to all kinds of problems. If you do store something in plastic, make absolutely certain that all the air is taken completely out of it. The best thing to use is a canvas bag or cotton bag. These will allow the garment to stay moisture free and still breathe.
Never Hang Knits
We all have seen those knit shirts that got hung on a hanger incorrectly and it is not a pretty thing. The arms get all distorted and picks and holes begin to develop in no time. Knits are almost certainly going to become misshapen if you hang them. Instead, fold them and place them neatly in a closet or drawer.
Ditch the Wire Hangers
Wire hangers are not good for anything clothing related and should be removed from your closet. They are wonderful to help get your keys out of a locked car, but terrible for your clothes. Invest in better hangers and you will recoup the cost in no time when your clothes last twice as long. {Shop for Hangers here.}
Partially Air Dry Your Cottons
Cottons are going to give you all kinds of trouble if you dry them for the full time in the dryer. The best way to handle this problem is to dry them via the air when possible. If you can’t do that or don’t have the time, simply dry them until they are slightly damp and then finish them off in the breeze. This will keep the air fibers from going brittle and will almost certainly add years of life to the garment.
