Are you in the market for a new laptop? After talking to the Intel folks, I have a new perspective on how to shop for a computer. This is one area where the lowest price laptop, may not be the one for you.
What am I going to do with this computer?
This should be the first question you ask yourself when you are shopping for a new PC. For me, I run multiple programs at once because I’m a woman and I like to multi-task. So I will have a browser, skype, photo program, document program, etc. all open at one time.
Like many people, I expect my computer to function no matter how many windows or programs I have up. Your high school or college student is going to be doing as much or more multi-tasking on their laptops as I do! This is why it is important to look at storage, memory, and processor.
Figure out your budget and buy the best you can within that budget. You want this laptop to last a few years and the better system you purchase, the longer your student will be able to use it! Check out Intel’s How to Choose the Right Processor page to help find your perfect processor.
Intel makes 80% of the world’s PC processors. The processor is the brains of the PC. If you are wasting time staring at the dreaded hour glass on your PC, then the brain of your computer is too old and probably time for an upgrade. (If only, we could do this to our real brains!)
The newest processors are the Intel Core i3, i5, and i7. The higher the number in the series, the faster processors. This doesn’t mean that you necessarily need an i7 just because it is the fastest processors as it goes back to the question above, “What am I going to do with this computer?”
Hardcore gamers will want an i7. For the rest of us the Intel Core i5 processor will do the trick. The i5 even received some ohs and ahs at my workplace, though at the time I had absolutely no clue what an i5 processor even was.
The Intel Core i5 processor, which is the processor in the Acer Aspire Timeline, is what Intel recommends for your student. For students, the laptop is their entertainment and work center all in one. Mobility, long-lasting battery life, and performance is what is needed!
As a dedicated Mac user, I was impressed with the performance of the Acer Aspire Timeline that Intel sent us. It has an Intel Core i5 processor and the battery life is phenomenal. Our current laptops have battery life time is around 2 hours. The Acer Aspire Timeline is around 11.5 hours. Yes, 11.5 hours.
Did I say it was also really light weight? As a blogger, I often go to blogging events and conferences and it can wear a person out toting a heavy laptop around. I can never bring myself to take the mini-laptop because the performance is horrid and I need a full keyboard. With the Acer Aspire Timeline I don’t have to sacrifice performance to save my arms!
If I can compare myself to a student for a moment, they are going to be toting their laptops all over the place. The need something light weight! The Acer Aspire Timeline with Intel Core i5 processor is just 5 lbs.
Do you feel smarter about processors now? Would you like to win a Acer Aspire Timeline? Of course you do! Intel has been very generous to our readers and are giving one very lucky Bargain Briana reader a Acer Aspire Timeline with Intel Core i5 Processor valued at almost $800!

I get the hour glass whenever I try to take our laptop anywhere outside the house away from a plug. The battery life is so small. Our laptop is used for my work, my husbands work, and my daughter’s play. I tend to multi-task between stores and blogger websites!
Jaque
With the ancient computer I now use, there are many “hour glass” moments…so frustrating. I multi-task by having several windows open and using each for it’s own search results…makes it a bit faster to get pertinent info. My student is a computer nerd and can make me look like a complete computer moron! She whiz’s through research projects….typing 120 words a minute helps…she is amazing. :-) Thank you.

I have problems with the hour glass when waiting for facebook. It is often soooo slow or things won’t load. My son can only do one thing at a time….boys/men have a tougher time multi-tasking than girls/women do :o)

We have to be careful how many applications we open on our old PC. If you are surfing the net, checking e-mail and listening to music and decide to open up a program like Photoshop, our computer doesn’t hang, it usually crashes and restarts. This laptop would come in mighty handy. Thank you for the chance to win.

I do some multi-tasking on my computer (don’t have a laptop), but I know my granddaughter (in high school) does “everything” on hers. It’s a tool for classes and also social networking and entertainment. She really needs an upgrade and I know she’d be happy to trade me hers for a brand new Acer.

My dreaded hourglass moment is always in the middle of a job. I’m a graphic designer and my programs eat computers…I have to have like ten open at once, processing 100 MB files sometimes. I usually have to get a gamer computer for the high-grade graphics card and processor. The worst is with film – now that throws up that hourglass a lot. My student is very young, so she just does little preschooler games on the computer. She likes to do the painting programs. Gonna be a designer like mommy ;)

My dreaded “hour glass” moment is when I waited to the last minute to submit my income tax forms online. I finished all the forms and hit submit. The hourglass just sat there. Computer froze up, I had to reboot the computer and fill the forms out all over again, and try to get them in by the deadline.
I multi-task streaming music online, working on spreadsheets for work, and checking email.
My students multi-task trying to be on Twitter,Facebook, Myspace and Youtube all at once. Got love teens!

I get very frustrated when my email lands in cyber heaven for me doing nothing – I am hoping to find it one day – but when I try to go through the diagnoses part of the help program = the hour glass starts and it never seems to go away – so I reboot and start over. My kids have learned to do their computer work at school as we don’t have modern enough software to complete many of their tasks – but I bought this computer for me to do word processing – and we have a pentium 266 on it – which I was told at the time from Time Warner that I barely met the criteria for hooking it to the internet – I am certain that this is part of the reason it goes so slow (I am the other part!).

I hate when I’m writing some lengthy and I know you are supposed to save often, but I forget and then I get the hourglass and i have to completely restart and often lose what I’ve been working on. I often have many applications open at the same time – email, itunes, games, web pages, word, etc.

I use my laptop for work and home, and always have ten windows open at the same time. Multi-tasking is my life, and the hourglass is the dreaded result a lot of the time.

Usually when I’m on, I’m checking facebook, email, and getting my savings deals. Doesn’t seem like too much, but even that can sometimes overload this old laptop! I tend to be “in the middle” of printing coupons, replying to an email, and having new internet pages loaded when I get “the hourglass” and curse that I can’t finish/save my work! Ahh!

My hourglass is so bad it is making my computer so slow. My laptop’s screen dies two years ago I found a Monitor for free on Craiglist which is ancient. First, let me say that I multitask EVERYTHING! I rarely have less tha 15 windows open at the same time, everything from outlook to IE to solitare, itunes, photoshop, aim, and word not to mention some hulu and facebook action. My son is less scatterbrained though, he is usually checking email, Aiming, and surfing the net. My heart stops every time I click save on a word .doc or a photoshop pic that I’ve been working on for hours and the whole computer stops for a second and the hourglass pops up… usually that means that its preparing to crash! I’ve had to do several data recoveries on my computer over the years and it would be nice to have a CPU that is powerful enough to keep windows in line :) Thanks for the giveaway.

The “Hourglass Moment” stretches into eternity when I’m on a blog post like this one, which has over 100o comments. You are a considerate blogger, and have the comments paged. I just came from a blog where all 1100 comments had to load on one page before I could post a comment. I not only got the hourglass, but had to end the process three times in the task manager before I could get it all loaded. I’ve usually got 6 to 10 tabs open in IE, plus photo editing and word processing. I can’t play music anymore with all that going on. Gaming is linited to games as old as my computer = 12 years.

All hourglass moments are dreadful to me as I am very inpatient when it comes to waiting on a computer. My computer is on its last legs and I am afraid to even turn it off.
Liz
I’m usually multitasking between a photo edit program, cad, facebook, 2 open web pgs @ once & email. That hour glass always pops up when large software programs are open.

My biggest hourglass moment is when both my sons need to use the computer for homework at the same time I’m doing work on the computer.

I’m an architectural designer and I got that problem a lot on my desktop… especially when I have multiple graphics programs open, like autoCAD and photoshop. The worst was during my college crunch time when I lost a rendered section perspective that I had been working on from 1am-5am… I guess my lack of sleep was the reason I hadn’t saved recently, but there was no way for me to fix the problem before our studio presentation. Luckily my model and plans were so awesome I didn’t need the finished drawing (pinned it up where it was) and my grade didn’t suffer.
Deb
My hour glass moments – mostly happen when I’m working on “work”. I can have 5-10 things open at a time.. and sometimes I just hang.. and rebooting takes 10 minutes or more at home… frustating when its almost midnight and I should be in bed.
Multi-task.. that is my middle name. Email, surfing, testing software, researching.. and more all simultaneously.
My son – tries — key word tries to multi-task with doing spelling words on the web (he’s going into 3rd grade) while playing Wizards 101 on the web.
We so could use a new computer – this 8 year old dinosaur is on its last leg!

I could really use a new laptop. I work on Photoshop quite a bit with my son’s photo’s & my laptop just sits there processing so slowly. Of course I always have Outlook and a multitude of IE windows open at the same time. Even if I didn’t, Photoshop is so processor intensive that it takes forever to edit my photos. Could really use a new faster laptop because I’m starting a children’s photography business. THANKS!

I have to do projects for various departments in my company – quite often I’ll be designing a menu, creating new forms, fixing someone else’s document, answering emails and other things all at the same time. The worst is when you have worked long and hard on something and go to hit the save button and the computer freezes.
My home computer right now is so old and decrepit, I often will go off and make myself a cup of tea while waiting for it to get itself together. Please pick me!!!
Gayle W
My son is in graphic design, and he typically has many memory-hog programs up at the same time. His graphics program is the biggest user of memory, and he cannot have it hour-glass on him in the middle of creating new graphics. All his work is then gone. He has his music program up, some form of instant message up, email, facebook, a browser for searching and who knows what else. It’s the only way he can function, I think.
I cannot fault him though, he gets it from me. He is always laughing at how many windows and tabs I have open at the same time. But again, it’s the only way I can function. Getting the hour-glass can totally ruin my day!

I wish that the only problem we had with our computer was the “hourglass” moments!….We have to cope each time that we push the on button that it actually comes on. We push the button, the computer will make a noise then shut itself off within seconds and then turn back on and again shut off. We have to hit the on button to manually shut it off then hit it again and hope it will come on normally. Sometimes we have to repeat this process 20 times or more before it actually works! It does not have any more room even for updates and some of the keys are loose! We need this in a bad way! I have a 15 year old that uses it for reports and he gets very frustrated with its problems and makes him want to stop doing his school work. It is also our communication to the rest of our family. We moved to Florida this past year and are here all by ourselves so the computer is our link to everything!

I use my laptop for everything, most importantly for writing, which I do for a living, for personal growth and to communicate with friends. The hourglass always seems to be its slowest when I’ve spent more than an hour writing something I’ve poured my heart into — then LOST!
Mary V
I had an ugly hourglass moment – my senior thesis for my college history paper. two hours worth of work – gone! I should have known better, but was too busy typing to save my doc – lesson learned!
Caroline
I open up about thirty blogs at a time to read in the morning because I’m old fashioned and I like to see them on their site instead of through a reader. They all have to load at the same time.

I work from home a lot (via Citrix) so I would have a lot of hourglass moments because I was trying to use Showcase Query, Outlook, Excel while also reading personal email, social media, etc. The worst was when I tried to re-open files over the remote network, it would say I already had them open so I’d have to re-open as read-only, re-save with a different name… sometimes I’d end up with 3 or 4 versions of the same file!

I usually have a browser (or more browsers), a documents program with many windows open (I change my mind alot), my photo program and then theres work (home daycare) applications like menus, attendance, curriculum, our site, and photo programs. The kids have games, social sites and school applications they can access. We always spend more time waiting for things to load we recently were able to get high speed wireless internet which was a total change for dial up which is all we had available. My kids found a new like for computer games now that they can play and not wait 5 hrs for a game to load so this laptop would really speed things up:)

Worst hourglass moment was when my daughter was over using our computer to apply for jobs and each time she got close to finishing, the computer would lock and the hourglass moment cost her precious time on a TIMED application process. She would then be shut out and have to start the process over and over again! She left in tears and had to go to use someone elses computer to apply. We have also had lots of these moments with procrastinating kids for school reports and down to the wire with our TORTOISE of a computer!

OMG…..Where do I start…My computer is sooooo slow. It’s 6 years old…lol..I can be in the middle of something and that little hourglass will pop up and sit there spinning for a couple minutes then my screen freezes. So i have to restart it. This happens all the time. I pay bills online and I love my FB. I like to play games and chat. But I’m starting to think it’s not worth it b/c of my computer..lol..

Thankfully my husband is an IT guru and works on computers for a living, so we don’t have that problem much… most of my “hour glass moments” are when I’m waiting around for my children to give up the computer after watching thier favorite videos and playing games so that I can do my school work and any other family related things (product research, photo editing and printing, couponing/bargain hunting, etc). I do occasionally hang the thing up when I’m using Adobe CS to edit photos or create a custom invitation and try to do something else as well. I’m SOOOOOO ADD. :)

I get the hour glass sometimes when I’m trying to load pictures. Usually I have our accounting program, facebook and paperport up at the same time. Some days it does cause trouble. My son is a WOW fanatic, so that is his biggest thing he does on the computer besides YouTube.

What does your student multi-task?
I was the student till last May… Word document, google, several websites running while doing research along with BlackBoard, and PowerPoint.

The dreaded hourglass moment, “My son was taking his learners permit test online, when he clicked to send his answers, we got stuck on the “hourglass”. Not only did it never move again, they failed him because time expired. He was so depressed and I felt so bad for what happened to him. Needless to say, he did get his license when I took him up to the DMV and he restested. Our computer is 15 years old, as old as him. He needs a reliable computer for school purposes. I wouldn’t want what happened to him happen to anyone.

My worst hourglass moment is when I’m on deadline to get a transcript done, and I’m researching three or four different terms/names/places/etc at once. Having the word processor, spreadsheets, and lots of internet tabs open at once and simultaneously using them is oftentimes the stuff of nightmares.

In the market for a new one for my daughter (free preferred). Her school will be requiring each student in upper elementary a laptop of their own (goodbye notebook and pens) while in class. It’s strictly for academic class (no web browsing while in class). Have to get her familiarize with basic programs (MS Word and Excel). Would be so nice to win this one.
Multi-tasking? At work, between excel and word (for reports), and web (for travel arrangements). At home, between facebook.com (farmville included) and geocaching.com. Though at home, it’s a little slow, got an old laptop that needs to retire.

I was working from home one day and had been laying out a 20-page booklet with graphics, text etc. Just as I was about to hit the save button…….out pops the hourglass and the whole thing crashed! For some reason, autosave hadn’t run in the past 30 minutes, so the “recovered” version didn’t exactly recover everything! Talk about a lesson learned!
Julie
I usually have a work browser and a personal browser open at all times. Along with iTunes. In the work browser, I have the main page, schedule page, and a couple others open at all times. In the personal, I have email, facebook, homeschool articles, blogs. LOTS of multitasking going on. Would be great to be able to do it away from the computer desk.
