Does your family have an emergency kit? If not it is high time to get one prepared or take the time Organizing Your Emergency Kit to make sure you have everything you need. Emergency Kits can be created with multiple items, or purchased as a whole unit that is a bit less customized. Both are great options depending on your needs. While most of us hope we never have to use them, they are great to have in a safe location should you get stranded without electricity, in a natural disaster or even in your car in inclement weather. We recommend having an easy to access emergency kit in your home and in each of your cars.
Organizing Your Emergency Kit
Make A List Of Needs: While you can purchase ready made emergency kits that have a nice amount of suggested items in them, there are still personal items you may want included. Once you have your list, compare with the list of items below that we recommend. Update your existing kit with any missing items.
- 1 week supply maintenance medications
- Basic First Aid Kit
- 1 Gallon Water Per Person and/or Water Purification Tablets
- Shelf Stable Foods (at minimum 3 days worth for each person)
- Spare Batteries
- Battery Operated Cell Phone Charger
- Battery Operated Radio
- Emergency Contact List & Important Papers
Update Medications & Medication Lists: Make sure you have a current list of any prescription medications, supplements and vitamins anyone in your family is taking. Include list of prescribing physicians, pharmacy purchased at and any other pertinent information including daily dosage.
Update Important Papers: We already talked about home organization involving your important papers. Now is time to go ahead and update those papers again and add to your emergency kits if you haven’t in recent months. Make sure you have the most current insurance information, emergency contact lists and such in this kit.
Create A Plan For Emergencies & Add To Kit: It is important to not just have an emergency kit, but to make sure everyone in your family knows where it is and what to do with it. Create an emergency plan for tornado, hurricane, fie, flood or other potential issues your location could have. Inclement weather and tornado are usually the most commonly found reasons for an emergency kit, but it is always safe to go over what each family member should do in case of emergency. Make a copy of this and add to the kit as well to refer to as needed.
Updating and organizing your emergency kit is a precaution that most hope they never have to use. Household organization and management means being prepared for the things that may or may not happen. This week organizing your home includes prepping for something you hope you never have to use.
